【Warm Doctor Essay Solicitation】Warm Medical Service, Warm Concern and Warm Heart

 Hits: 2959 Time: 2020-07-01

I was weak since my childhood, and quoted my mother’s words, “he was so vulnerable to pediatric pneumonia, and often went to see the doctor, and even the doctor got familiar with him after repeated visits for many times”. My destiny was related to hospital due to this congenital deficiency. Even now I still remember the clinic in my hometown. Although the building was old, the incandescent light bulb was bright enough, the bottom parts of surrounding walls are painted green, well-polished. I always put my face onto the wall to cool down when I was in a fever. The doctor was mid-aged, and my mother called him “Doctor Xu”. He always warmed up his echometer before roaming his instrument on my body here and there. Then I was staring at him in white robe and wearing white hat and mask, watching him sketching on his notebook, and then warning me a lot. This was my very first impression of “doctor”, who was always smiling just like the warm sun.

I proceed without hesitation to sprinkle my youth at the sacred hospital after I grow up. My department is the most critical place of the entire hospital. I cannot sneak off when I’m on duty. I’m just like a wind-up soldier from putting-on my work dress to taking-off my work dress every day. Just like charging forward on a battlefield, and selflessness, passion, elaboration and cautiousness are required. Everyone including the department director and the nurses are making full efforts on their respective posts like screw nuts. Breathtaking rescues are routine here, while my topic today is about those warm stories between doctors and their patients in daily life.

There is a way out

“It’s really an unforgettable Spring Festival, I’m lying in ICU and I see the medical staff are busy for me, I’m almost moved to tears. I used to consider ICU as the gate of hell, but I never think it’s so warm here, both doctors and nurses are telling me to cherish hope everyday, they tell me to believe them and believe myself. What reason do I have to give up!”. These words are from an aunt from Yuyao. Aunt Zhou went to the local hospital for consultation for cough and ardent fever during the Spring Festival in 2018, and she was diagnosed as URI, but the treatment was ineffective, on the contrary she had chest distress and polypnea, and the local hospital was at a loss. At the critical juncture, our department director went there and decisively started the ECMO team of Department of Critical Care Medicine after consultation for aunt Zhou, and safely transferred to the ICU of Zhejiang Hospital. Rescuing for more than 50 days and nights, keeping ECMO while she was awake. Both hands and feet of aunt Zhou were protectively confined, and we continuously encouraged her as long as there was one indicator turning better. We initiatively talked to her families to learn their family condition, and we unlock the confining belts on her hands when she was upset, and holding her hands. We told her that her granddaughter was waiting for her to cook braised fish. Just like this kind of “cajoling”, aunt recovered with help from our team and her own efforts. She fell into tears and shook hands with each nurse while walking out of the ward. She said, “although I can not mention your names, but I keep all your lovely faces in my mind. All of you are good people, and one good turn deserves another”.

Then sentence from our director came to my mind at that moment, “medicine should have the human temperature, and only in this way could medicine be dignified. Medicine is the art of benevolence, but is also the art of people”.

He is smiling in bushes

Mr. Zhou and her wife came to Hangzhou for tour ten years ago. It’s the first time for him to drink waxberry spirit, and he considered it as a rare vintage in the world. He thought he barely had chance to drink it so he had his wife drank 2.5 kg. Mr. Zhou suddenly got chest distress after being drunk that night, and he was sent to the hospital nearby for examination. His blood pressure was pretty low, so he was then transferred to the ICU of Zhejiang Hospital. And he recovered after staying in hospital for 31 days. Now Mr. Zhou has retired, and is taking a colorful life. He gives the best “Year-end Award” to all the medical staff when we pay a return visit to him this year. We have received his blessing messages. It’s a happy  thing to know he is in a good health condition recently.

Flash back to Mr. Zhou’s hospitalization to our department ten years ago, the patient was not cooperative and was lacking of understanding to the illness, the families of the patient showed doubt and they thought the attending physician was too young, they thought the nursing nurses were not professional and their observations were not careful enough, excessive operations and too much costs, and many unsatisfactory voices came for different territory features. The department director and the head nurse led the staff to start from properly behaving, then enlightened the patients, talked to their families, and guided them to express their inward anxiety, listened to their pour-out, worried for their worries, and the strained doctor-patient relationship was gradually “loosened”, and the barrier in their mind was broken, and then the patients totally believed the medical staff and they actively cooperated in treatment.

“We are like a trench teammates, through our fine treatment and care, patients can spend the most critical moment of life, gradually recover, our fatigue and hard work should not count”. Ice-breaking, defrosting and heart-warming should be the same as this.

Champion among Flowers

Many names came into my mind, she was off night duty but didn’t go for rest immediately, while she was patiently helping the patient to open TV sets and teaching him to press the keys to change channels. The elderly patient was hard of hearing, and then she kept close to his ear repeating again and again; he was doing the abdomen B-mode ultrasound for patient. The patient had stomach ache, so he bent down as much as possible not to cause burdens to him. He would rather be tired himself, and he bent down and twisted his hand to move the probe; the patient was a young girl and long hair was her favorite hairstyle, although he is a man, he carefully learned to help her in binding her hair into the naught Bun; she took no rest during the entire night shift, and she was busy helping the patient with both leg in moving problem massaging, only because the patient wrote with bad handwriting: fail to fall sleep due to soreness in both legs. Although her massaging technique was not the best, her hands made the patient sleep well by massaging legs; he accepted the assignment from hospital to go to the border of the country for medical assistance, and he was too far away to be able to help when his mother was hospitalized one day. He was as agitated as an ant on a hot pan, and he and she spontaneously set up a team to look after his mother in rotation after learning this news. Thus his mother got companion from more sons and daughters even her son was far away from her.

These are a group of lovely people!

They read illness and read people more, a warm doctor may not prolong the life of every patient, but it could make every patient to live with a warmer heart. I often appreciate the life arrangements, which enable me to witness people warming up each other at hospital, and this sight always interpret what’s a better life in the most exciting manner, feel what life is, and what’s called finite and infinite. A hospital with warm doctors will be a warm hospital warming up people’s heart!

As a poem written by Wang Mian: standing in a forest of ice and snow, different from peach and plum blossoming in contending. Fragrance inflates suddenly one night, covering the vast heaven and earth. Hereby this poem is quoted to praise our warm doctors and nurses.
