As a member of the 28th batch of Chinese medical aid team to Mali, Zhang Ruxin, assistant chief nurse of the Department of Anesthesia and Surgery of Zhejiang Hospital, flew to Mali with the team members on April 12, 2022, to carry out an 18-month medical aid mission. As early as October 2021, he took the initiative to join the out-of-hospital medical team. During the intensive training in China, he actively conducted in-depth business exchanges with surgeon-related doctors to prepare for the surgeries to be carried out in Mali, and also brought many instruments and consumables with him, which laid the foundation for the smooth operation of the medical team in Mali.

After arriving in Mali, Zhang Ruixin, with his familiarity with surgical instruments and equipment, overhauled many surgical equipments in Malian hospitals within the shortest time, and checked the performance of every instrument in the operating room, restored nearly 10 sets of surgical instruments, and cleaned up the surgical instrument storage room comprehensively. He also labeled the commonly used surgical instruments with their customary French names so that he could communicate smoothly with the Mali doctors during surgery.

The ophthalmology department was the first department to perform surgery, and the surgery was performed within the first week of arrival. Before departure, he learned that the ophthalmology microscope in Mali hospital was out of order, so he brought several microscope accessories with him under the coordination of the team. After arriving at the hospital, Ruxin Zhang cooperated with the ophthalmologist to replace the microscope parts and successfully repaired the microscope and the ultrasound machine for cataract surgery in the ophthalmology department, so that the volume of ophthalmology surgery increased quickly.
